The Aberfeldy to Blair Atholl Loop
Distance - 54 miles/86km
Head south out of Pitlochry and hang a right at Ballinluig, heading towards Aberfeldy. At Logierait you can take a left over a privately owned old railway bridge that crosses the River Tay. Head on to Grandtully and Aberfeldy, driving alongside the river for most of the way. From Aberfeldy the road winds up towards Schiehallion or “The Fairy Mountain” with its dramatic peak which is often hidden in cloud. A great chance to stop off at Highland Safaris at Dull to meet their red deer, try your hand at gold panning or enjoy the excellent cafe (we love the empire biscuits). Heading down towards Tummel Bridge at the far end of Loch Tummel, the road rises up again as you travel through to Trinafour and the switchback road taking you over to Dalnacardoch and the A9.
A short hop South on this busy road brings you to The House of Bruar which is most definitely worth a stop and shop (and possibly a wee walk up to the Falls of Bruar) and then onto Blair Atholl with its famous Blair Castle, home to the Earls and Dukes of Atholl since the 13th century. Back roads take you past the National Trust for Scotland’s Killiecrankie Visitor Centre with stunning walks and echoes of one of the bloodiest battles in our history. From Killiecrankie, it's just a few miles back down to Pitlochry.
