The Birks of Aberfeldy

The Birks of Aberfeldy is the faerie glen of Highland Perthshire. A magical spot full of waterfalls and an incredible number of species of mosses, ferns, lichens and trees. So many species in fact, that it is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The Birks was made famous in the 1780’s by Robert Burns who was inspired to write a song of the same name whist sitting on a natural stone bench half way up towards the top bridge.

It’s a lovely 3km walk up to the top bridge but can be steep and slippery in places. I would advise going up on the left of the burn and coming down on the right. On the ascent you will pass by a number of lovely little falls on the many tributary streams and the decent allows for glimpses of the distant hills including Ben Vrackie sitting above Pitlochry.

If you plan to stay around Aberfeldy for a while, we would recommend a coffee stop at the Aberfeldy Watermill and bookshop, or lunch at The Three Lemons. Legends of Grandtully will cater for all your chocolate requirements on the way back to Pitlochry.
