Loch Lomond and the Trossachs

Distance - 178 miles/286km

Loch Lomond has long been a favourite haunt of visitors to Scotland, who admire the serene beauty of the area. To the east of the loch is the Trossachs area. This is Rob Roy country: an outlaw born at Loch Katrine who spent most of his life successfully dodging his pursuers in the mass of surrounding hills. Further east is Crieff, a busy little town with the nearby Glen Turret, one of the oldest distillery in Scotland. Lush green countryside is with you throughout this journey and loads of stopping off points and visitor attractions. Starting from Pitlochry follow the River Tay through Aberfeldy and Kenmore to the head of Loch Tay, and along its long and beautiful shoreline to Killin. Heading along to Crianlarich it’s a left turn to drive to the head of Loch Lomond with stunning head turning scenery all around. At the end of the loch the village of Balloch provides a good resting point with lots of shops and cafes and this heralds the start of your Trossachs adventure.

Aberfoyle is a bustling tourist town, stock up on your tartan trinkets here! But the drive up and out of Aberfoyle is unforgettable over the Duke’s Pass to Callander and along the A84 to Lochearnhead. The drive along the shore of Loch Earn is beautiful and brings you to the quaint village of St. Fillans and then a sweet meandering drive through to lovely Comrie and then onto Crieff. Shortly after leaving Crieff the route heads left up through the Sma’ Glen (the small glen) which is like picture postcard Scotland in miniature, just stunning. Eventually you’ll drop back down into Aberfeldy (a walk up the Birks of Aberfeldy through the steep and deeply forested gorge is wonderful) and then it's a short hop back to Pitlochry.
