Not far outside Braemar is Braemar Castle. Built as a grand hunting lodge on the banks of the River Dee in 1628 by the Earl of Mar, the castle has been the seat of the Chiefs of Clan Farquarson since the 1800’s. Now run and restored (ongoing) by the Braemar Community, the castle is an excellent tourist attraction with a lot to offer. Excellent audio or guided tours give a glimpse into the rich history of Braemar Castle. Have a look at their website for more information and opening times. Well worth a visit combined with a trip to Balmoral Castle just a few miles down the road. Braemar is around a one hour drive from Pitochry.
