Carn Liath – Beinn a Ghlo

Carn Liath is the lowest of the three munros in the Beinn a Ghlo range and is one of our favourite local hills. Sitting high above Blair Atholl it is seen clearly from the A9 as the hill rising above the iconic whitewashed walls of Blair Castle. The scar of the footpath up the South face can be seen for miles both up and down the A9.

As a simple up and down hill, Carn Liath is best approached from the car park area at the lovely Loch Moraig. A short, but slightly boggy walk in leads to a steep scree-like path up the south face – this is the scar you can see from the A9. Great views from the flattish top including a good look east at Ben Vrackie above Pitlochry.

A quick up and down can be done in about 4 hours, but there are multiple additional loops and peaks that can be included. Taking in all three Beinn a Ghlo munros is about 22km and will take around 10 hours. The Loch Moraig car park is about 15 minutes drive from Pitlochry.
